'Frida Project' artwork to be unveiled in Hillsboro

The Frida Art Project was created over the summer during the Tuesday Night Market. Every Tuesday, local artists volunteered their talent to work on ten, 3-foot-by-3-foot panel paintings with a common theme combining landscapes and people of Oregon and Mexico.

Each panel began with a stencil of famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The artists were free to use their skills (and feelings) to surround the face of Frida with their interpretation of the project.

These colorful panels are now installed on the front and inside of the building at M&M Marketplace, just a few blocks south of downtown Hillsboro. M&M is a Latino marketplace that houses more than 60 individual vendors.

"This project, and this open house celebration, will bring two cultures together to illustrate all that is wonderful in our own community," wrote artist Linda Holland in a press release. "The public will be invited to see how creativity happens when two cultures combine their talents."

The Frida Project Open House Celebration will be held on Oct. 8 from noon until 5 p.m. at M&M Marketplace, 346 NW Walnut Street in Hillsboro. There will be music, dance and food at the free event. The event includes live music throughout the day: from noon to 1 p.m., Gerardo Calderon; 1-2 p.m., Ramiro Ramirez; 2-3 p.m., Aztec Dance Group "Mitotilztli Tezkatlipoka," and 3-5 p.m., Randy McElroy.

Artists who painted the ten panels are Plata Garza, Heather Lowe, Patricia Gifford, Rosa Noyola, Felipe Garcia, Tesla Clementine, JanSu Hirst, Lauren McElroy, Arturo Villasenor and Linda Holland.
